Connecticut Yankee Council
In this new position for the Council, I oversee how the Scouting America and Connecticut Yankee Council brands come to life to the community and external stakeholders through public relations, marketing, events, and fundraising/development.
This includes:
- Oversee the strategy driving nearly a dozen events, engaging local and regional communities and interest groups
- Guide public affairs and elected stakeholder engagement strategies, including the largest concerted effort to bring elected officials to the Council’s largest event
- Coach and motivate Board and executive-level event chairs to engage and activate their planning teams
- Rebuild donor engagement and external communication systems and infrastructure
Lead communications and marketing strategies for Scouting in southwestern Connecticut including public relations, crisis communications, web development, social media, paid marketing, and more. I spearheaded the redesign of the Council’s website, led the largest paid marketing campaign in the Council’s history, and guided messaging for multiple newsworthy crises including property sales and leadership transitions.
Selected planning team highlights:
- Fall 2021 & Spring 2022 Recruitment Campaigns — first integrated media campaign (broadcast, social, digital) with earned media and community events; contributed to positive YoY membership growth
- Camp Phoenix — CYC’s virtual camp during COVID-19 that engaged hundreds of Scouts from nearly half the country with earned media across all major CT TV networks, print, and national media including The Weather Channel
- Ignite Scouting — CYC’s virtual fundraisers during COVID-19 featuring John Ratzenberger and others
- Discover Scouting Chair — revitalized the Council’s annual program kick-off as an engagement event (shifted to one of the Council’s largest virtual program events during the pandemic)
Led committee of volunteers to build Wepawaug Valley’s District Committee, resulting in approximately 10–15% new members on the district committee.
Board member focused on marketing, communications, and engagement strategies.
Led all external-facing elements of CYC’s largest event with thousands attending: brand design and execution, marketing/promotion, fundraising and sponsorships, VIP guest engagement, and more.
Led brand, marketing and promotional efforts, and elected/public official engagement for the Council’s largest event.
Advise lodge communications committee on creating and executing communications/publicity while guiding youth lodge officers on best practices.
Invited 4+ dozen public officials to the Council’s largest event, resulting in greetings and visits from elected officials across the Council’s 37 communities.
Redesigned and modernized lodge communications to 1,000+ members: redesigned print, launched first email marketing system, and improved social media usage.
Supported communications/marketing with photography and video, VIP support for Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca’s visit, media relations, and social content. Shifted to public information/crisis communications when a microburst impacted the event.
Created the majority of content across then-emerging platforms (Twitter, Facebook, blogging) to keep families informed during Scouting’s centennial Jamboree.
Supported more than 100 Scouts, parents, and siblings in “Cub World.”
National Boy Scouts of America
Redeveloped and regrew the National BSA’s Communications & PR Support Committee, guiding and executing communications in support of BSA strategic goals and advising professional staff. Served as a BSA PR contact for the 2022 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC), resulting in multiple positive media stories.
Guide and support marketing leads in local councils in New England and Europe, liaising between councils and the National Marketing Committee. Lead training at Territory conferences on communications and marketing strategies, best practices, opportunities, and resources.
Provide feedback and guidance on National BSA marketing strategies and plans to help Scouting tell a cohesive story.
Developed comprehensive strategies for key BSA initiatives including the Summer of Service campaign and membership recruitment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Guided a global team of youth and adults to create hundreds of hours of streaming content aired in dozens of countries and viewed by 100,000+ viewers.
Developed the primary internet stream content strategy (story development, guest booking, talent prep) and served as liaison for stories involving key officials and guests (national key 3, elected officials, donors).
Supported on-site registration at the first Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
Prepared food and conducted food & beverage transactions on the retail food staff.
National Order of the Arrow
Guided a new team of Arrowmen serving as connective points between national OA committees, programs, and stakeholders with the National Communications Team. Led planning, implementation, launch, and vision for a youth leader new to national service, including a service desk, engagement plan, and process training.
Advised the NCC on implementing strategic plans and aligning youth-led work to strategic imperatives. Promoted OA efforts on BSA social channels.
Guided youth responsible for channel management across web, social, eNews, and app for the 2022 NOAC; advised two dozen+ youth and advisers on collaboration and content operations.
Advised promotional materials, branding elements, and on-site collateral; designed the event patch and branding package; taught brand management best practices.
Advised graphic design, brand management, and operations pillars—streamlined processes, improved service speed and quality, and built operations capacity.
Advised youth teams on content strategy, planning, and creation during Momentum, engaging thousands during COVID-19; coached collaboration and inclusive programming.
Advised Arrowmen producing dozens of hours of video content: scripting interviews, planning news packages, booking leaders, and media training on-air talent.
Led a team to create 100+ graphics leveraging the OA centennial brand for email, web, social, wayfinding, special events, and the first OA Livestream program.
Led branding, pre-event promos, three event newspapers, Snapchat Geofilters, event photography; coordinated a youth team and cross-team collaboration.
Founding member of the OA’s National Communications Committee as Creative Services Lead; recruited and managed design team delivering 600+ graphics for national programs and OA Centennial initiatives.
Captured key events and visual storytelling at Michigan State University.
Wrote and edited articles for the printed National Bulletin; sourced relevant photography.
Evaluated and implemented OA social media approaches; developed content.
Captured and archived national OA photo/video media across NOACs, OA High Adventure, Jamborees, section/region events, and exemplary lodge media.
Led writing, layout, and publication of three printed newsletters; oversaw event photography and weekend-in-review slideshow.
